PONTIAN: A 13-year-old boy hanged himself after being scolded by his father for going on a joy ride with his friends and coming home late.

The teenager, who also suffered from asthma, was found by his mother in the bathroom on Sunday.

He had used a rope tied to a railing to hang himself.

The boy was rushed to the Pontian Hospital but succumbed to his injuries at about 2am on Monday.

Earlier on Sunday evening, the boy had gone on a motorcycle joy ride to Benut.

When he came home at about 7pm, his father scolded him for being late.

The boy then went to take a shower.

Suspecting something amiss, his mother went to check on him after 10 minutes, only to discover that he had hanged himself.

Pontian OCPD Supt Zahaliman Jamin said the teenager might have been depressed and resorted to suicide after being scolded.

“Post-mortem results revealed that the victim’s existing asthma condition might have worsened his injuries, resulting in death.

“The victim did not leave any suicide note,” he told The Star here yesterday.

In another case, police discovered the body of a man in his 60s at a house in Ayer Baloi here at about 3.30pm yesterday.

Supt Zahaliman said police believe that the man, who had been living alone, died of old age.

“We are classifying the case as sudden death,” he said.

Supt Zahaliman urged those with information on any crime-related incidents to contact the police hotline at 07-221 2999 or the nearest police station.
